Aquatic Manager Course (New in 2023)

Aquatic Manager certification is designed for individuals responsible for oversight of aquatic programs and services (regardless of their aquatic experience or credentials), possibly as part of a larger management portfolio. The 16-hr. course equips these managers with the knowledge, principles and skills require to understand and confidently direct excellent aquatic programming with responsive customer service and attentive compliance with health and safety standards in the aquatic environment.

Aquatic Supervisor Course (New in 2023)

Aquatic Supervisor certification prepares instructors and lifeguards for front-line supervisory responsibilities in aquatic facilities. The 13-hr. course provides the knowledge, skills and tools required by aquatic team leaders who oversee instructional and recreational programs on a day-to-day basis.

Prerequisites: Candidates for the new Aquatic Supervisor must hold Lifesaving Society Swim Instructor or Lifesaving Instructor and National Lifeguard certifications.


Aquatic Management Instructor (New in 2023)

Aquatic Management Instructor certification prepares instructors to plan and deliver the Lifesaving Society’s Aquatic Supervisor and/or Aquatic Manager certifications (the instructor must hold the certification in order to teach it). The 14-hr. course explores and refines the professional teaching and leadership competencies required of Lifesaving Society instructors at this level.

Prerequisites: Aquatic Management Instructor candidates must hold Swim Instructor or Lifesaving Instructor, National Lifeguard and Aquatic Supervisor or Aquatic Manager certifications.

First Aid Instructor

The 20 hour First Aid Instructor course prepares participants to teach all aspects of first aid and CPR. This course prepares Instructors to plan and organize first aid and CPR courses and teach and evaluate students in the written and practical aspects of the course. Candidates must bring proof of pre-requisite awards.

Prerequisites: Minimum 16 years of age, Standard First Aid certification (need not be current).

Trainer Course

The Trainer course is the first step in the three-step process to be appointed as a Trainer for the Lifesaving Society. The course provides candidates with an understanding of the expectations and requirements to teach instructors, and prepares participants to successfully apprentice as a Trainer on the Instructor course(s) of their choice.

Appointment as a Trainer is a 3-step process:

  1. Successfully complete the Society's Trainer course led by a current National Trainer.

  2. Successfully apprentice with an experienced Trainer on one Instructor course in the stream you wish to be appointed as a Trainer.

  3. Submit your completed Training Record and certification fee with a positive recommendation from the experienced Trainer with whom you apprenticed.

Prerequisites: Bronze Examiner or First Aid Examiner or National Lifeguard Examiner, or: experienced Swim Instructor or Officials Instructor or Lifesaving Sport Coach.

National Lifeguard - Pool Option (FULL COURSE & RECERTIFICATIONS)

National Lifeguards guards are always in training to keep their skills, knowledge and fitness sharp. They are required to keep other important certifications such as CPR and first aid up-to-date. Some are trained in advanced treatments like using oxygen or in the use of specialized equipment like defibrillators and personal watercraft.

National Lifeguard is Canada's only nationally recognized lifeguard certification program. National Lifeguard is a legal certificate for lifeguarding throughout the country. It is the only lifeguard certificate recognized by the province of Ontario for lifeguarding public swimming pools.

National Lifeguard certification is available in four options: Pool, Waterpark, Waterfront, and Surf. National Lifeguard is recognized as the waterfront supervisory certification for Ontario Recreational Camp Regulation 503/17.

Prerequisites: Minimum 16 years of age. Bronze Cross certification and Standard First Aidcertification (need not be current) from one of: Lifesaving Society, St. John Ambulance, Canadian Red Cross, Canadian Ski Patrol.

National Lifeguard Instructor

The National Lifeguard Instructor course provides candidates with an understanding of the principles and practices on which the National Lifeguard program is based. The course explores teaching approaches and techniques appropriate for National Lifeguard candidates.

After successful completion of the course, National Lifeguard Instructors are certified to teach the National Lifeguard course in the option(s) they hold (i.e., National Lifeguard Instructors who hold National Lifeguard Pool may teach National Lifeguard Pool, etc.).

Prerequisites: National Lifeguard (any option) and Lifesaving Instructor certifications (need not be current).


Pool Operator - Level 1

The Pool Operator Level 1 course blends safety management with the essential knowledge of facility operation. The course provides pool operators with the knowledge and resources to operate and maintain safe swimming pools in accordance with provincial health regulations and includes:

  1. an understanding of the various types of pools and the impact of maintenance planning.

  2. knowledge of the principle contaminants of water and the applications of water treatment to pool and spa systems for both Class A and B pools.

  3. a practical, hands-on approach for solving typical water treatment problems.

  4. the implications of Recreation Water Illness and concepts underlying pool air quality.

Pool Operator - Level 2

The Pool Operator Level 2 focuses on regulatory standards for pool operation and chemical application principles in order to maintain balanced swimming pool water. Participants learn to problem solve and how to safely adjust swimming pool chemical levels in order to maintain a healthy and safe environment for bathers and staff. The course includes:

  1. a through review of regulatory requirements and standards for the operation of aquatic facilities including: pools, spas, wading pools, and waterfronts

  2. a review of the principles of balanced pool water and the step-by-step procedures pool operators should follow when making adjustments to chemical levels in aquatic facilities

  3. an open forum for discussion and resolution of problems facing pool operators

Prerequisite: Lifesaving Society Pool Operator Level 1 or equivalent.


Pool Operator Instructor Course

The Pool Operator Instructor course prepares Instructors to teach and certify candidates in the Society's Pool Operator Level 1 and 2 programs.

Pool Operator Instructor certification prepares instructors to plan and deliver the Lifesaving Society’s Pool Operator Level 1 and Level 2 certifications (the instructor must hold Level 2). The 12-hr. course explores and refines the professional teaching and leadership competencies required of Lifesaving Society instructors at this level.

Prerequisite: Lifesaving Society Pool Operator Level 2, Lifesaving Instructor.


Aquatic Safety Inspector Course

For those interested in evaluating operational safety standards for aquatic facilities, this Lifesaving Society certification provides a strong understanding of the regulations, protocols and guidelines that apply to the operation of aquatic facilities. Participants apply knowledge learned in the class through hands-on inspections using Society Inspection checklists.

Prerequisite: None


Safeguard

Safety supervision training for guardians (e.g, day camp counsellors, counsellors-in-training and others) who accompany groups of young people to pools or waterfronts. The course stresses the responsibility undertaken by these group leaders for safeguarding the young people in their care even when under lifeguard supervision.

Safeguard focuses on water safety awareness, accident prevention and the principles of aquatic safety supervision. Safeguard teaches participants how to identify hazards and at-risk behaviours, how to recognize potential victims, and how to respond safely in an aquatic emergency.

Safeguard training is designed for swimmers and non-swimmers alike. Successful completion of the course is based on active participation in all sessions and evidence of the Must Sees in each item.

Prerequisites: None. Ideally, guardians are at least 12 years of age, able to swim, and have some lifesaving experience.





Standard First Aid & CPR-C

Standard First Aid provides comprehensive training covering all aspects of first aid and CPR. Standard First Aid incorporates all of Emergency First Aid and is designed for those who require a more in-depth understanding of first aid including: legal implications of first aid treatment, spinal injuries, heat or cold injuries, bone and joint injuries, chest injuries, and medical emergencies. Includes CPR-C certification.

The first aid program is not restricted to aquatic candidates. You can use the Lifesaving Society's first aid awards to train non-aquatic staff (camp, playground, maintenance, etc.) and the general public.

Airway Management

Airway Management certification provides senior and experienced lifeguards with specific knowledge and training in the use of oxygen, suction devices, oral airways and masks/bag-valve-masks.
